For some time now Eskom been offering the public incentives to buy into their solar geyser project. Now, in light of the 2010 Wolrd Cup it seems, an even bigger incentive has been offered - the doubling of its solar water heating rebate.

Only registered products, complying with the following criteria, qualify for the rebate: The system must have passed the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) tests, and comply with the South African National Standards (SANS) for thermal and mechanical performance and safety.

All suppliers and installers participating in the solar water heating programme have voluntarily registered themselves and their systems, the process having been managed by an independent auditing firm. The types of systems tested and sold depends entirely on the supplier.

The programme is structured around a rebate which reduces the selling price of a SABS approved solar water heating system. The reduction in price is based primarily on the performance of the solar water heater and its associated electricity saving potential. You receive a rebate directly from Deloittes, the facilitating auditors of the programme.

The Eskom Solar Water Heating Programme is driven by government which has set a target for renewable energy to contribute 10 000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of final energy consumption by 2013. Solar water heating could contribute up to 23% of this target. Eskom is supporting this drive through the large-scale introduction of solar water heating as it is one of the most effective renewable energy sources available.
