What is a Flat Plate Collector?
This solar collector is the most common collector type used in domestic water heating. The panel is an insulated weatherproof box containing a dark solar absorber plate under one or more transparent covers. The box is usually made out of metal such as aluminium, and come in a range of mounting options including roof mounted, installed in the roof itself or as a free standing application.
The way that the collector works is fairly simple - the dark absorber plate soaks up heat from sunlight that passes through the cover and then gives the heat over to the water or heat transferring fluid that flows though tubes underneath the absorber plates. The collectors heats the circulating fluid to a temperature of roughly 30-80°C (86-158°F) and are ideal to heat standard geysers.. The performance of a flat plate collector is ideal for South African weather conditions.
