The Challenge
At Happy Hounds, sustainability isn’t a buzzword – it’s a way of life. With a deep commitment to ethical and eco-conscious practices, we strive to minimise our footprint in every area of our operations. However, our mission to provide nutritious, ethically sourced pet food was regularly threatened by one major issue: unreliable electricity. Load shedding disrupted kitchen operations, compromised food safety, and led to costly wastage due to freezer failures and spoiled stock.
The Solution
To resolve this, we partnered with oneSolar to design and install a rooftop solar energy system that would enable full operational independence. The installation now powers our entire production process – ensuring that our kitchen runs smoothly and our cold storage remains fully functional regardless of Eskom’s supply issues. The system forms a key part of our broader commitment to sustainability: we use locally sourced organic vegetables, ethically traceable proteins, recyclable packaging – and now, 100% solar-powered production.
The Outcome
Since switching to solar, Happy Hounds has eliminated production interruptions, food spoilage, and stock shortages. Our team works with peace of mind, knowing our operations are stable, sustainable, and resilient. Best of all, we’re now able to say with pride that our dog food is made from sunshine – delivered with care, powered by clean energy, and crafted for pets we love like family.
