The Challenge

The client initially installed a UPS system from oneSolar, featuring an 8 kVA Victron Inverter and two 3.5 kWh Pylontech batteries, providing a total battery capacity of 7 kWh. While this setup offered backup power, the growing impact of load shedding highlighted the need for increased capacity and solar integration to reduce grid dependence.

The Solution

In 2023, the system was expanded with two additional 3.5 kWh batteries, doubling total storage to 14 kWh, ensuring extended backup during outages. By 2024, the client opted for a more advanced setup, upgrading their 8 kVA UPS system to a three-phase configuration while integrating solar panels.

The system now includes:

  • Three 8 kVA Victron Inverters
  • A 3 kW Fronius Inverter
  • 10 x 550W Canadian Solar Panels (capable of generating up to 5,500 kW during peak summer conditions)

This upgrade enhances battery cycling efficiency, reducing electricity costs. Additionally, surplus energy can be exported back to the grid for further savings.

The Outcome

Victron’s flexible technology proved invaluable, allowing seamless integration between old and new inverters. The system now operates as a highly adaptable solution, transitioning from single-phase to three-phase with the ability to scale further. With improved energy management, reduced reliance on the grid, and long-term financial benefits, this solar and battery upgrade ensures a more sustainable and cost-effective energy future.
