The Challenge

With a large home spanning 1,000m² and extensive power needsincluding heating systems, a pool, and various household applianceselectricity costs were substantial. Load shedding added another layer of frustration, making energy independence a key priority. While a generator was initially installed, a more sustainable and cost-effective solution was needed to reduce reliance on the grid.

The Solution

The transition to solar power was carefully planned, balancing financial considerations with environmental responsibility. A combination of solar panels and a battery backup system was installed, ensuring optimal energy use. During daylight hours, solar panels generate power, significantly reducing grid dependence, while the battery system provides uninterrupted power for a few hours before the generator is required.

Despite limited roof space, a strategic layout allowed for the installation of 38 solar panels, maximising energy generation. The addition of an oil-fired boiler for heating further enhanced efficiency, lowering overall fuel consumption.

The Outcome

The results have been remarkable – over 17 months, the average monthly electricity bill has dropped to just R4,700. The integration of solar and battery backup has not only minimised grid reliance but also ensured seamless power supply during load shedding.

This journey toward energy independence reflects a well-planned approach to sustainable living, proving that a thoughtfully designed solar system can deliver both financial and environmental benefits for homeowners.
