The Challenge
Our solar solution was designed to tackle the unique challenges of our 5-acre property. Initially, we had a 5kW inverter for essential needs, but during load shedding, our irrigation systems – connected to two boreholes – were severely affected.
Being entirely off-grid for water, we relied on borehole filtration for household use. However, power outages disrupted irrigation timers, making it difficult to track watering schedules, while the house water pump would shut down entirely. Although we could switch back to mains, the inconvenience made us seek a more sustainable and independent solution.
The Solution
Collaborating with an electrician and oneSolar, we implemented an extensive solar system featuring a 45kWh battery and three inverters, supporting a daily usage of 110kWh. This robust setup ensures uninterrupted power, allowing essential systems – including water pumps – to function seamlessly during load shedding.
Our unique roof, with its steep pitch, posed installation challenges, but the oneSolar team navigated them expertly, using ropes and specialised ladders to complete the job efficiently.
The Outcome
Before switching to solar, our monthly electricity bill was R15,000. Now, it has been cut down to just R3,000 – a massive saving. The system has proven reliable, providing a consistent power supply despite ongoing load shedding.
While we continue to refine our energy efficiency by implementing geyser timers and transitioning to LED lighting, our solar investment has been a game-changer. Beyond the cost savings, it has reinforced our commitment to sustainability and energy independence, proving that going off-grid was the right decision for our property.
